How Does Gas Ducted Heating Work?

A ducted gas heating system is operated by drawing in air through a fan, and passed over to a heat exchanger to warm it. A return air vent (grille) recirculates air to the furnace, beginning the cycle again. The furnace (fueled by natural gas or LPG), which contains the heat exchanger, is usually installed in the roof space or just externally, but it can also be placed under the floor or even in internal cupboards if space is limited.

Ducting (which is connected to the heater/furnace) distributes the heated air through out the home and is usually hung/strapped within the ceiling space or under the floor.

Registers (also called ‘grille’, ‘outlets’ or ‘vents’), situated in the floor, ceiling, or sometimes the wall, direct warm air into rooms. Heating outlets are best placed around the perimeter of the house to provide an even heat distribution throughout the house.

Types of Gas Ducted Heating

Gas ducted heating is differentiated by its energy efficiency rating (from 3 star to 6 star) which refers to the overall efficiency of the unit. Braemar is the first company in the world to produce a 6 star rated gas ducted heater as well as the first to make a non-condensing 5 star ducted gas heater.

Why Gas Ducted Heating?

Gas ducted heating is the most popular method of heating in Melbourne as the efficiency of heat output is not dependent on the outside temperature (unlike Reverse Cycle Heating Systems).

Zone Control
Zone Control or Zoning may also be introduced to further reduce the running costs of a ducted heating system, and allow you the option of deciding which areas/rooms of the house you would like to heat or cool by switching the zones on or off.

Cooling and Heating

There is also the option of introducing cooling through the same outlets (commonly referred to as a ‘gas add-on’). This method involves a cooling fan coil being incorporated at the design stage, allowing you the versatility of receiving cooling from the same system (same ducts) for the hot summer months. A second option is to have a gas ducted heating system + evaporative cooling system (two systems running simultaneously but two duct systems required).
